This is an update on the RCY report released in February 2008, which looked at the support system for children and youth with special needs. These reports examine how the Ministry of Children and Family Development and Community Living BC deliver these services.

Four British Columbians and two B.C. organizations are receiving recognition for their excellence and exceptional efforts benefiting children and youth around the province.

This update provides an overview of reviews and investigations of child deaths or critical injuries which occurred between February 1 and May 31, 2008. The Representative’s reviews and investigations will identify and analyze recurring issues, to help prevent similar deaths or injuries in the future, and to inform improvements to services.
Keynote speakers Roméo Dallaire and Stephen Lewis head up the B.C. Representative for Children and Youth's upcoming Champions for Children and Youth 2008 BC Summit taking place October 20-21st, 2008 at the Sheraton Vancouver Wall Centre in Vancouver, B.C.. The Summit is an international gathering of child advocates and experts in children’s well-being, to explore excellence and wisdom in caring for vulnerable children.

Vulnerable children and youth with special needs and their families and caregivers need a more responsive and accountable system of supports, said BC's Representative for Children and Youth, Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond.
Vulnerable First Nations children with special needs will benefit from an announcement from Premier Gordon Campbell pledging support for Jordan's Principle, B.C.'s Representative for Children and Youth said today. Jordan's Principle states governments must help the child first and sort out who pays the bills later.
New senior appointees to the Representative for Children and Youth's office form the core of a strong team dedicated to helping improve the lives of B.C.'s children, said Representative Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond.
An in-depth study of children and youth in care of the government shows they are not achieving the same educational outcomes as children who have never been in care.
