Housing, Help and Hope: A Better Path for Struggling Families.

A struggling young family needed short-term housing assistance so their baby could be safe, but instead the child was taken into government care. A Representative for Children and Youth investigation into a First Nations baby’s critical injury finds that many of the systemic factors that played a major role in the infant’s removal from his parents still exist today.

Kids, Crime and Care: Youth Justice Experiences and Outcomes.

A major B.C. study released today shows that although children and youth in care are at higher risk of becoming involved with the youth justice system, early interventions targeted at risk factors can change the paths of these vulnerable adolescents. The study is a joint project of the Representative for Children and Youth, and the Provincial Health Officer.

An improved health strategy must be put in place for youth who are in or leaving jails, says B.C.Â’s Representative for Children and Youth.  This is a key recommendation in a report released today by Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond. She conducted an independent review of practices and procedures relating to physical examinations of youth in custody.

This update provides an overview of reviews and investigations of child deaths or critical injuries which occurred between February 1 and May 31, 2008. The Representative’s reviews and investigations will identify and analyze recurring issues, to help prevent similar deaths or injuries in the future, and to inform improvements to services.

Representative for Children and Youth's upcoming Champions for Children and Youth 2008 BC Summit taking place October 20-21st, 2008 at the Sheraton Vancouver Wall Centre in Vancouver, B.C..  The Summit is an international gathering of child advocates and experts in children’s well-being, to explore excellence and wisdom in caring for vulnerable children.

Jordan's Principle states governments must help the child first and sort out who pays the bills later.
