Representative Acknowledges Child Abuse Prevention Day in B.C.

In acknowledgement of Child Abuse Prevention Day in British Columbia, the Representative for Children and Youth calls for a focus on prevention, and also for support for the child welfare professionals in the province who commit themselves so fully to the protection of our vulnerable children and youth.

Representative Honours B.C.'s Social Workers during Social Work Week, March 9-15th, 2009.

On the occasion of Social Work Week in British Columbia, the Representative for Children and Youth commends the province's social workers for their dedication and commitment to the safety and well-being of our most vulnerable young citizens and their families.

 

 


 


Representative Marks International FASD Day

Nine is the critical number as we mark International FASD Awareness Day today. The ninth day of the ninth month is recognized around the globe to increase awareness of children born at a disadvantage because their mothers drank during pregnancy. Just nine months of alcohol avoidance during pregnancy gives a child an opportunity for a full and healthy life in which he or she can fulfill potential.

Representative Celebrates International Youth Day

On this day 10 years ago, the United Nations declared August 12 to be International Youth Day. Today's society is the youngest ever, with about 50 per cent of the world's population aged 25 years or under. More than at any time in our history, youth action, inclusion, and full participation are integral to  planning the future.

I would like to take this opportunity to offer my personal thanks to all foster parents in B.C., in honour of Foster Family month. The safe harbour you provide for children is tremendously important in their lives, as well as to society as a whole, and I commend you for your efforts.

As we celebrate National Social Work Week across the country, I offer my personal thanks to each and every frontline social worker in this province and throughout the country who works diligently to try to keep our most precious resource, our children, safe from harm and to support the interests of vulnerable children and their families each and every day.

B.C.’s Representative for Children and Youth is officially endorsing the Joint Statement on Physical Punishment of Children and Youth.  The Joint Statement is a project of the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario and a coalition of Canadian child and family serving organizations.  It is aimed at raising awareness of the harmful effects of physical punishment.
